Law Firm Carolinas was the first Carolinas law firm recognized by Best Lawyers in the category of “Community Association Law.” Firm attorneys frequently speak to community association audiences and have authored numerous HOA and condo articles. Partner Jim Slaughter was the first Carolina attorney inducted as a Fellow into CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) and served as CCAL’s national President. In addition, he is past President of the NC Chapter of the Community Associations Institute and recognized by Lawyers Weekly in its first class of eleven “NC Legal Icons.” Partner Steve Black is a Board Certified Specialist in Residential Real Estate, recognizing his work with real estate and community associations. Partner Harmony Taylor serves as Co-Chair of the State Bar Association’s Community Association Law Group. Partners Steve Black, Harmony Taylor, and David Wilson have all served on CAI’s Legislative Action Committee that monitors community association legislation, Harmony Taylor as Co-Chair of the NC-LAC and David Wilson as Chair of the SC-LAC.

State law and many association governing documents can require that HOA and condo meetings be conducted in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (12th Edition). Partner Jim Slaughter has written four books on association meeting procedure, including recent releases updated for the new Robert’s: Robert's Rules of Order Fast Track (a quick go-to guide that provides details on the most used motions, appropriate informal procedures for association boards, and general advice for shortening meetings) and Notes and Comments on Robert’s Rules, Fifth Edition (a user’s guide to Robert’s Rules that uses a question-and-answer format to cover the most misused and asked-about provisions). Both books have been selected by Publisher’s Weekly as “Editor’s Picks.”
